newborn photography workshop | newborn photography perth

In the photography world we have superstars and idols, people that are fresh and innovative and create beautiful, timeless work.  When it comes to photographing newborn babies, there’s the world renowned Anne Geddes and there’s also Carrie and Britt from Baby As Art.  I was lucky enough to spend a day with them recently in their studio near San Diego and it was an amazing opportunity.  Crazily, I flew in for three days and then flew right back to Perth and was gone for five days which was all my family could cope without me – and me them to be really honest.

I love working with newborn babies and I feel strongly about improving my skills and offering my clients something great – not just something that marks a time in their life, but memorable, beautiful, moving images.  You deserve the best and that’s always my aim when photographing your precious family.

Following are some images from our day together, but I would like to highlight that I didn’t pose these babies, they were posed by Carrie and Britt and I was lucky enough to photograph them.

first article – newborn nurseries | Newborn photography perth

I hope to add articles relating to all things baby – pregnancy, newborn and babies from time to time.  Some will be my own personal musings and some from mum’s alike who would like to contribute an article that would be valuable to new and experienced mum’s.   Please feel free to email me at if you have something you’d like to add.

So first up is a personal point of view article on the fun of designing your new nursery http://fionacolvin.com/fcpblog/articles-2/a-newborn-nursery/.  I’ve added some links and some images of designer nurseries that caught my eye.  Please feel free to make comments and add any links that you think other mum’s may like to check out.  Any links that I like and are suitable for the article will receive a $50 credit towards a newborn or baby session.

I’d also really like to photograph a lifestyle type newborn or baby session in a home with a gorgeous designer nursery, similar to the one’s I’ve shown in the article.  If you have a beautiful nursery, please let me know and on offer is a complimentary session and five digital images for you to print as you wish.  Send me an email with a photo of your nursery to .

The Fine Print

$50 credit’s are only available to the actual person posting and are valid for three months only when they will expire.    Only one credit per person and may only be used toward a newborn session or a sitting, but non-moving baby.

There are only two lifestyle session offers available and selection of those people will be at my discretion.  The sessions must be redeemed within 8 weeks of offer being made.

baby girl take three | baby photography perth

I very rarely admit defeat when it comes to photographing newborn babies, but after two attempts with this gorgeous blue eyed beauty, we called it quits and decided to wait until she was a bit older.  The poor angel suffered from reflux and it took a few months for her to find her happy place, but since then she’s been doing wonderfully.  So she came back today to visit me – I’m so grateful for her mummy for having trust in me and bringing her back and I think we did a pretty good job today.  She’s such a beautiful girl and has that perfect cherub face and stunning blue eyes.

I’m often asked how much “Photoshopping” I do of my images and what do I do with the eyes to get them to stand out and shine.  The simple answer to that is that yes, I do spend a great deal of time after a session enhancing each individual image to get them just right and no I never do anything in particular to the eyes.  It’s all about finding great light and when you have a stunning eyes, no extra help is needed!  So these beautiful eyes are just how they seem here.

And just because she’s beautiful in colour or black and white – here’s a black and white version.

a few more | Newborn & Family Photography Perth

Just a few more from my session that I blogged earlier of gorgeous sisters.

Family sessions can often be challenging, especially involving young children, some still even just babies.  It takes a great deal of patience and if I may be so boastful, talent to get it right.  It’s what sets apart family photographers in my humble opinion – some may be cheaper,  but if you are trusting these precious moments to a photographer, make sure you pick someone who can deliver.  You don’t want your images to look awkward, you want them to showcase an amazing time in your life and it’s so important to select someone who is experienced at working with children.  It will be so worth it!

I love the following images and I think they’re a perfect example of what patience and experience can produce:)
